Ok, so you have created the perfect video. Everything went in your favor, all the practicing has paid off, and you were able to successfully create your phenomenal masterpiece! Now what? I see and hear a lot of people talking about vlogging, tips to make your videos better, and ways to make them look more professional. These topics are great but what if no one sees your video because there are 50 to 100 more with the same or similar title? This is where SEO for YouTube comes in. You may be saying to yourself right now, wait, I thought SEO was for Google and other search engines? You are correct! YouTube is a search engine!
In this post, I am going to talk about a few things outside of the standard “adding keywords” to your video on the YouTube platform alone. While I 100% agree that using keywords on YouTube is necessary, there are some other things that will help your video get ranked higher. What I will cover in this post is the processing of the video before you upload it to YouTube.
SEO Tool for Websites
Before we start we will need to generate a list of keywords. I have found this free keyword tool works very well for standard SEO. Using this tool, you can generate a large list of keywords. As you can see from the image below, you will still need to perform some processing of the data by removing invalid keywords.
Once you remove and click the start button, the tool will generate an even larger list of keywords. As you can see in the screenshot below the list of keywords that was generated is massive. If we were to use these results, we would need to process the list and identify the best keywords. So, do we spend hours processing these keywords one by one through Google searches coming up with the top results or is there a different way. There is a much better way that I will show you now. What I am going to show you is a very well-known technique for obtaining keywords for YouTube, Amazon FBA, Facebook Ads, and many other things.
Keyword Search for YouTube
Instead of having to process such a large list, let’s look at a more targeted way to generate our list. This technique is very well-known and has worked very many times in the past. Also, the keywords are already ranked by YouTube so there is no need to change them. On YouTube, if you search a keyword, it will provide you a list of popular search terms.
These search terms will be added to a notepad document and added to our video later. This same technique can also be used to find popular search terms in Google.
The popular terms that were presented to us from both Google and YouTube is our new keyword list. Much quicker, cleaner, and more efficient. So, what do we do now? Let’s start by processing the video so we can push them up to YouTube.
After you gather your keywords, you must pick a catchy title. I would suggest using words such as “How to” or “Tips for”. Look at current videos that have high rankings and see what they are using. Follow a similar path to those who have already succeeded but do not duplicate. Once you know your title, change the video name on your local computer to match what you will use on YouTube. For instance, let’s say that we are making a video about YouTube SEO and we choose the title YouTube SEO Tips for Beginners. Name your video the same thing. Do not worry about spaces in the title of the video.
Next, we will change the metadata of your video to match your selected keywords. Depending on which type of system you are using, there are a few different ways to perform this action. In this tutorial, I will show the steps for Windows but the steps for Mac are almost exactly the same. I have added a screenshot of where to change the metadata for Mac as well.
In the file explorer, right-click on the file and select properties.
When the properties window opens, click on the “details” tab. You will see the description field, this is where we will add our data.
Next, we will add your title into the “Title Field”. The Subtitle can be any subtitle you choose for your video. Make sure that this matches when you upload it to YouTube. Be sure to give yourself 5 stars because let’s face it, you put a lot of work into this. Finally, you will see the tags field, this is where you will enter your keywords. You can leave the comments section blank.
Click apply and you are done.
For mac, the process is almost identical. Right-click on the file and select “Get Info”. From here you enter the same data that you entered in the steps for PC.
Your video is now ready to upload. Be sure to add the same tags/keywords to YouTube so everything matches. Hopefully, you enjoyed this tutorial for YouTube SEO. I will be providing links soon for different online groups which will provide you more tips and tricks.
